1 Star Competition Rules
Equipment
Bows
Only horse bows will be used. Including traditional designs for recurve and flat bows. Longbows and other traditional designs not intended for use on horses are excluded. Olympic recurve, compound bows, bows with an arrow rest, sights, centershot, weights plungers etc are not allowed. Bows with a design that includes metal pieces on the body are not allowed. Brass nocking points are allowed. Bows must be 35 lbs or less.
Arrows
Only feather fletched arrows made of wood, bamboo or carbon fiber are allowed. Aluminum arrows are allowed for ground horse archery but not allowed for use on or around horses.
Target tips and field tips are permitted for ground archery. Broadheads are not allowed. Sharp arrow tips are not allowed to be discharged or carried while mounted on a horse.
Foam tipped arrows are required while mounted on a horse. Uncovered metal blunts and blunt tipped arrows designed for hunting are not allowed.
Quivers
Quivers are not required. When used they should be appropriate for the style and activity. Quivers must be secure and hold the arrows securely.
Gloves and arm guards may be worn based on personal choice. Finger tabs are not allowed.
Close toed shoes are required at all times. Riding boots with a heel are required while riding.
Jeans are allowed. Breeches are allowed. Tan, brown, black, white, gray, canary or navy blue are allowed. Full seat or knee patch are allowed. Belts are required. Polo, english or western style show shirts are allowed, satin or silk shirts are preferred.
Tack must be safe and usable for mounted archery at this level. Saddles with a horn are not allowed. Western saddles are permitted but must have the horn removed.
Bridles are required. Bitless bridles are allowed. Double bridles are not allowed.
The horse must have free carriage of the head. Any device which restricts their head carriage is not allowed.
Excessively harsh bits are not allowed.
For trot and above, reins must be tied or short, and secured with a leather, velcro or elastic strap.
Safety
Ground Archery Range
The ground archery range will have a target line 5 feet from the target. Only 1 archer may cross the line to retrieve arrows at a time.
The shooting lines will be 10, 15 and 20 yards. Archers must keep one foot on either side while shooting. An archer may not pick up a dropped arrow during shooting.
The waiting line will be 15 feet behind the shooting line.
The Spectator line will be 15 feet behind the waiting line.
There will be no buildings, sidewalks, animals or people within 150 feet behind the target, or 60 feet to either side.
There will be a Ground Horse Archery Judge timing, scoring, whistling and enforcing rules.
Range Rules
Walk on the range
Keep arrows in the quiver until told to shoot.
No dry firing.
Leave dropped arrows until instructed to retrieve
If there is an emergency alert the Judge

Timing Rules
The archer will have 3 rounds, each 30 seconds to shoot all their arrows. They may not touch an arrow with their draw hand before the judge calls shoot. The may not release an arrow after the judge says stop. If they touch an arrow before the judge says shoot, they will have one opportunity to restart. If they touch an arrow before the judge says shoot a second time the rounds where they touched an arrow before the judge said shoot will not be counted. If they release an arrow after the judge says stop they will receive 5 penalty points. The judge will say ready, set, shoot. On shoot they will start the thirty second timer. When the timer runs out they will say stop.
Arena Range
Arena must be a minimum of 120/60 feet.
Only one horse may complete runs at a time.
The target may be up to 36 inches. It must be made of bronze, brass, steel or another material that will make an audible sound when hit. The target will be facing the long sides. Archers must shoot from one side only. The area behind the target must be free from spectators for at least 60 feet.
The archer may not begin shooting until the judge indicates.
Archer may transition into canter from trot and into trot from walk.
Team must stay in gait throughout the runs, either walk trot or canter. Breaking gait is penalized.
Team must stay on the rail throughout the runs. Coming off the rail is penalized.
Equitation
Tests will be judged by 1 qualified mounted archer, or a qualified riding judge and an archery judge. The riding judge will score equitation related points and the archery will score archery related points.
The team may not enter the arena before the judge indicated.
Ground archery will be judged by a qualified archery judge.
Logistics
Parking is in the field behind the temporary stalls
Ride time will be announced by July 16th
